Debunking FAIR FairMormon Sarah Allen CES Letter Rebuttal

Debunking Sarah Allen

Part 2: Manipulation Techniques in the CES Letter

Debunking Sarah Allen's and FAIR's
The CES Letter Rebuttal Series Smear Campaign

Detailed Responses:

Brief Summary

CES Letter Rebuttal, P2

Important Note

So much of Sarah's attacks here are plagiarized ad hominems made by FAIR all the way back in 2013. I've already addressed and debunked so many of these attacks on the CES Conclusion page of my Debunking FairMormon that I wrote in 2013.

This is how unoriginal Sarah is. She's just recycling and regurgitating stuff that I've already debunked a little under 10 years ago.

After completely annihilating Sarah Allen's and FAIR's deceptive and dishonest smear attacks in Part 1, we're now in Part 2: Manipulation Techniques in the CES Letter & How to Avoid Them. Part 2 has an echo from Deceptive Sarah's debunked Part 1 piece but includes new content and new attacks that I debunk and address here.

August 28, 2021 Update

Deceptive Sarah Allen showed her deceptive colors again. Instead of releasing a Part 2 that was due Wednesday on FAIR's blog, Sarah has deceptively released a new, rewritten and rebranded "Part 1". She claims that the original Part 1 FAIR blog post released last week that I debunked was "loaded inadvertently" (LOL).

No, Sarah. What happened was I annihilated your lies and smears just a few days before when I released my Part 1 debunking. I know that you know about this debunking because I have screenshots that people have sent me of private Reddit DMs notifying you about my debunking and that you wrote back in acknowledgment. It's also clear that you know about my debunking and that you've read it because in your new bullshit and rebranded "Part 1" that you just released this week, you have deleted a lot of the debunked attacks and fake quotes from your original Part 1 blog post last week in your now new rewritten and rebranded "Part 1". However, instead of publicly acknowledging that you lied to your readers about me with your fake smears and fake quotes, you just couldn't help yourself so you added a new paragraph attack/smear filled with lies in your rewritten and rebranded "Part 1" blog post you released this week:

In the opening paragraphs of the Letter, Jeremy Runnells claims that he’s searching for answers to his questions and is hoping a CES director can help save him from his doubts and restore his testimony. That is misleading. I’m not saying that he didn’t deliver a copy of his letter to a CES director. I believe that he did. But the evidence I’m about to lay out shows that he was what is referred to in some circles as “PIMO”—physically still in the Church, but mentally out of it. He had already made up his mind it wasn’t true and, while he was still technically a member of the Church at that point, he had already left in his heart and was already working to lead others out with him. He was not hoping this CES director could answer unanswerable questions. He was lashing out, the same way he did several months earlier with his angry Letter to Elder Quentin L. Cook, posted to the Exmormon subreddit on October 9, 2012.

I respond to Sarah's above misleading deception here below along with her other deceptive new paragraphs below in the Detailed Response section.

But look at it, guys...my Part 1 debunking partly worked as Deceptive Sarah finally talks about my opening paragraphs of the CES Letter to her readers for the very first time. Unfortunately, it is a quick mention that is then mischaracterized and deceptively described by Deceptive Sarah with zero mention of my stating I'm a disaffected member who left the summer of 2012 - facts that I blasted Sarah over and over in my Part 1 debunking for failing to mention to her readers.

Notice that in Sarah's newly rewritten and rebranded Part 1, she removes many of her fake quotes and smears due to her bringing her readers' attention to my opening paragraphs of my CES Letter - something that I repeated over and over in my debunking of Sarah's original Part 1. This demonstrates that Sarah has read my Part 1 Debunking and realized she had to be more honest if she was going to save an ounce of face.

Unfortunately, Sarah isn't interested in being decent, honest and fair because instead of acknowledging my debunking and her errors and falsehoods, Sarah just went ahead and created new falsehoods and smears with her above bullshit paragraph along with other new paragraphs in her rebranded new "Part 1" FAIR blog post.

Sarah...this isn't your LDS subreddit echo chamber. You're not the moderator here. You don't get to control the conversation while deleting and hiding content that you do not like or to throw stuff down the memory hole while banning everyone you don't like. Lucky for everybody, I have the PDF screenshot here and the Wayback Machine link here of the original Part 1 from last week. Sarah Allen and FAIR can try all they want to throw their debunked Part 1 down the memory hole while trying to start over with a newly cleaned up and rebranded "Part 1" but all of this deception will be here to stay on cesletter.org for all to see.

In this Part 2 debunking, I am responding to both Sarah Allen's original Reddit Part 2 Post (PDF & Wayback Machine) as well as her rewritten, repackaged and rebranded August 26, 2021 "Part 1" FAIR blog post (PDF), which is primarily the content from the above-mentioned Reddit Part 2 Post mixed with some leftover content from Sarah's original August 18, 2021 Part 1 FAIR blog post that I debunked in my Part 1 Debunking.

In her new rebranded "Part 1" blog post that Deceptive Sarah just released this week, she completely ignores my rebuttal. No acknowledgment of her deceptions, mistakes or errors. No public apology to me. Like the LDS subreddit echo chamber that her deceptive series smear campaign was born out of, LDS subreddit moderator Sarah is continuing her modus operandi of keeping her readers in the dark about the rest of the story, the real context and the real truth.

It is clear to me that I'm dealing with an absolute dishonest, deceptive and immoral person and it is because of this that I have decided that I'm done engaging with this immoral, deceptive, unfair and dishonest person after I debunk Part 2 here on this page. You can see my announcement on the Sarah Allen homepage or down below on the bottom of this page.

The entire premise of Part 2 is completely hypocritical and laughable when you consider that Sarah Allen has set up and operated an echo chamber on LDS subreddit. Sarah gives us rosy language about searching and finding the truth but fails to see the irony of her own 1984 manipulative tactics in keeping her readers/sheep in the LDS subreddit echo chamber in the dark about the rest of the story.

The rest of the story is hidden from these readers on LDS subreddit because people who give respectful counterpoints and debunkings of Sarah's claims and attacks are immediately deleted and banned from LDS subreddit. Guess who's a moderator on LDS subreddit doing the deleting and banning? You guessed it...Deceptive Sarah. The same is true with all of FAIR's social media / echo chamber.

When I posted a simple link to my Part 1 debunking on FAIR's Facebook Sarah Allen post earlier this week, it was deleted and I was blocked from FAIR's Facebook page. Ditto for everyone else who commented on FAIR's social media providing rebuttals and counterpoints.

Sarah Allen, FAIR, LDS subreddit and Mormon apologists in general are not interested in truth, honesty and transparency. The name of the game is to preserve, at any and all costs, the so-called "good name" of the Mormon Church. The name of the game is to smear and to denigrate critics like myself and in turn poison the well for the faithful.

This entire Sarah Allen series smear campaign is the latest manifestation of this dishonest and deceptive approach.

Make no mistake, this series smear campaign is designed for one thing and one thing only: to smear Jeremy Runnells and attack his integrity while painting him as an evil, nefarious, conniving and Machiavellian type character out to "manipulate", "deceive" and separate Mormons from their tender testimonies. This series smear campaign has nothing to do with truth, facts and honesty and everything to do with misleading others about Jeremy Runnells and the CES Letter.

As one observer states:

"I have read most of what she's written, and much of it takes one position that she represents as the absolute truth or the most likely explanation of a particular issue without acknowledging that many of the positions she claims to be the answer have significantly messy counter examples that cast significant doubt on her assertions. History is no doubt messy, but when you take only the most faithful/apologetic examples and evidence of every issue and don't even acknowledge the counter evidence, it casts doubt on the credibility of the whole thing. She's never received any pushback on this since r/lds absolutely forbids it. That's what frustrated me most about her whole series. There is no way for the honest reader to have any check on her assertions. She refuses to post links to anything that doesn't support her positions, including screenshots to statements she claims Jeremy made."

There are zero valid points or criticisms made in this entire The CES Letter Rebuttal, Part 2: Manipulation Techniques in the CES Letter & How to Avoid Them section by Sarah Allen and FAIR (FairMormon).

Timeline

Important Context

Before we get into the weeds here in the Detailed Response in the next section, there is a timeline and a very important baseline of key facts and context that need to be understood and which will clarify and debunk most of the attacks below in this smear piece.

So much of the problem with this smear piece and smear pieces like this one is a lack of understanding of the timeline below and the context of when my comments were made. As one exasperated reader shared about Sarah Allen's entire hit piece:

Of course, there's also the appalling problem of completely made up and fake quotes that Sarah Allen presents in her series as well.

Future

I'm currently working on finishing my remaining responses to Jim Bennett, Sarah Allen & FAIR's latest series smear campaign, Brian Hales and other apologetic attacks. I'm also working on CES Director Revealed and an updated CES Letter.

I will also be working on my new upcoming book Now What? along with an autobiography so that people can know the real Jeremy Runnells and not all these insane, unrecognizable and evil Machiavellian versions of Jeremy Runnells cooked up by apologetic pieces like Sarah Allen's and FAIR's new series smear campaign.

I meant what I said in my March 2021 Facebook post when I released my debunking of FAIR's immoral and disgusting TITS Show:

When all is said and done a few years from now, FairMormon and Mormon apologists will be thinking this:

"We should've left Jeremy alone in his hiatus."

Detailed Response

CES Letter Rebuttal, P2

1984 Sarah locks down echo chamber

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

This is from Sarah's Part 2 Reddit Post:

And lastly, I will not link to the letter itself, Jeremy's website, or the exmormon subreddit, and ask that others do not do so in the comments. As always, follow the sub's rules (which includes discussing these things from a faithful perspective and not applauding the letter, as well as treating others with civility), or your comments will be removed and you may potentially earn a ban. This subreddit is for believing members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. If you can't respect that, have the decency to stay out of the conversation. Thank you.

Jeremy's Response

This tells you everything you need to know about Deceptive Sarah Allen and her motives here. This is an echo chamber that is bolted down and sealed.

This is not about the truth. This is not about an open and transparent investigation. This is not a debate. This is a con job engineered and manipulated to deceive others. It's a con job designed to lie about and smear Jeremy Runnells and the CES Letter. This is a con job in presenting a "faithful" side to the issues while keeping the echo chamber sheep clueless on the rest of the story that Deceptive Sarah deletes and bans.

This is Mormon propaganda that is designed to soothe and lull the faithful while keeping valid criticisms and debunkings outside the echo chamber.

Look at who shows both sides. I not only show Sarah's attacks and claims on cesletter.org, I share links and screenshots to Sarah's pages. I offer an open and transparent debate. Sarah, LDS subreddit and FAIR just censor and ban people to create a North Korean style echo chamber that only shares propaganda that Supreme Apologist Sarah Allen deems acceptable to present to her sheep.

Rebranded Intro

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

On Reddit, I’m a moderator at the LDS subreddit or forum. While I had heard of the CES Letter and had read it years ago, it wasn’t until recently that I began to realize just how prolific it was. So many of the comments and questions we were seeing on our subreddit were influenced by the Letter. I knew of popular responses to it by Jim Bennett, Michael Ash, Brian Hales, Scott Gordon, and an entire section here at FAIR, and I often referred questioners to those responses. At the same time, I noticed that many of those replies only provided brief overviews of the issues or were somewhat light on cited sources. There was room for a detailed response full of citations and sources showing the readers where to research the answers for themselves. I felt impressed to try my hand at filling that space myself, and also felt that, because the CES Letter was crowdsourced and born on Reddit, a comprehensive reply should also come from Reddit. That’s where I began this series, and FAIR has kindly offered to host them here as well.

Jeremy's Response

Let's unpack the above individually:

Clueless echo chamber moderator wakes up to reality

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

On Reddit, I’m a moderator at the LDS subreddit or forum. While I had heard of the CES Letter and had read it years ago, it wasn’t until recently that I began to realize just how prolific it was. So many of the comments and questions we were seeing on our subreddit were influenced by the Letter.

Jeremy's Response

This actually made me laugh because it demonstrates just how deep Sarah has locked herself in the LDS subreddit echo chamber. Here's a moderator of the LDS subreddit and she didn't realize until recently how "prolific" the CES Letter is.

Yes, Sarah...this is what happens when you and your LDS subreddit comrades ban, delete, ban, delete, ban, delete all day long. You insulate yourself from reality because you're snug deep in an echo chamber devoid of the other facts and the other side of the story that debunks the Mormon narrative you're desperately clinging onto.

Sarah plagiarizes Jim Bennett's work

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

I knew of popular responses to it by Jim Bennett, Michael Ash, Brian Hales, Scott Gordon, and an entire section here at FAIR, and I often referred questioners to those responses.

Jeremy's Response

These are the same sources that Sarah is plagiarizing from for her series smear campaign. Notice that she lists Jim Bennett first. She has mentioned elsewhere that she lists Jim Bennett's work first when sharing the resources she gives to people in the LDS subreddit. Further, when I looked at the rest of her series on Reddit, it's blatantly obvious that Sarah is shamelessly bulk copying Jim Bennett's work.

As I share in the Announcement, let's skip amateur Deceptive Sarah's distortions and just go straight to the original source that she plagiarizes from and my line-by-line debunking of that original source: Jim Bennett Mormonism® Manifesto Debunking

"felt impressed"

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

I felt impressed to try my hand at filling that space myself

Jeremy's Response

There's Sarah trying to bring in the Mormon god's stamp of approval on her rancid garbage and smear campaign and to self-promote that she's the new and latest shiny Mormon apologetic "Savior" here to save everyone from the CES Letter. Sarah, you might want to talk to Kwaku El & TITS gang, the Happiness Seekers people and the other former apologetic critics of mine...it never ends well.

Sarah takes her "felt impressed" self-promotion to the next level in the Sarah's virtual signalling and holy water attempt section below.

Sarah did fill up the space alright. She filled it up with rancid sewer sludge. As I've demonstrated in Part 1 as well as here in Part 2, Sarah is only contributing absolute deceptions, falsehoods, fake quotes, smears, zero context and omissions to the space.

You're much better off taking your line-by-line research needs of the CES Letter elsewhere to direct sources that Sarah plagiarizes from like Jim Bennett and FAIR.

The problem with Sarah Allen and her series smear campaign is that she's not telling you the truth. She's presenting distorted information that is not data-driven or reality-based. Sarah's mission and goal here is to defame and smear my name, integrity and character. This is not an investigation or a fact finding mission. This is LDS subreddit propaganda designed to soothe and lull inhabitants of her bolted down echo chamber while blatantly and dishonestly misrepresenting me and the CES Letter to them. This is made explicitly clear from moderator Sarah's Reddit comments.

CES Letter "crowdsourced and born on Reddit" lie and smear

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

"the CES Letter was crowdsourced and born on Reddit"

Jeremy's Response

There's Deceptive Sarah lying again. This new comment came after she saw my Part 1 Debunking of this lie here and here with actual links and screenshots. Deceptive Sarah knows her claim is not true and yet here we are with a fresh attack and smear from Deceptive Sarah this week still perpetuating this absolute falsehood that she herself knows is a lie.

Unlike Deceptive Sarah, I provide evidence, links and screenshots. Sarah Allen just provides lies and propaganda.

I was approached by the CES Director on March 22, 2013. I wrote the letter between March 22, 2013 until the day I sent the PDF to the Director on April 13, 2013. Mormon apologist Jim Bennett has seen the emails, the timestamps, the content of every email and the PDF that I attached and sent to the Director on April 13, 2013 (he read each and every page of the PDF). Jim has publicly come out to defend me.

Jim Bennett has publicly expressed that I'm telling the truth here from Day 1. Jim knows Sarah's above "crowdsourced from Reddit" is a lie as he's seen the evidence himself that this is not true. Shame on you, Sarah Allen, for misleading people.

As mentioned above, I wrote the letter between March 22, 2013 to April 13, 2013. During this time, I asked for feedback on my letter twice on Reddit. The purpose of my asking for feedback was to ensure a document that was worthy of the Director's time and efforts. I wanted to give him my best work filled with accurate and complete information and sources of my questions and concerns.

As you'll see reading each Reddit feedback post and all the comments in both posts, there is nothing of substance or value that I was able to use to create the letter. In fact, my rough draft was already close to 90% done by the very first Reddit feedback post on March 26, 2013. You'll see for yourself that Deceptive Sarah's "crowdsourced from Reddit" is a lie designed and engineered to smear me and the CES Letter. It's just not true and Jim Bennett is a Special Witness that it's not true.

Reddit Feedback Post #1 - March 26, 2013:

Link: Need Feedback! My TBM grandpa asked me to speak to his CES Director friend about my concerns. CES guy offered to talk to me. This PDF is a rough draft of what I'm sending over to both CES guy and grandpa. Need your feedback/advice, guys. Thanks!

Now, go to that link and read each and every comment. Notice that there's nothing on there of substance that I could've used to write the letter. There's no "crowdsourcing" going on here.

In fact, this Reddit post was posted 4 days after the Director had first emailed me on March 22, 2013. I had already written 90% of the letter by March 26th when I posted this Reddit post asking for feedback on my 90% completed letter.

You can see I'm telling the truth with comments from this Reddit post like the following:

These two comments show that by March 26th, I had completed every section of the letter except for the Witnesses section as well as the Scriptures section.

This is why Deceptive Sarah doesn't give you a direct link to these Reddit posts to back up her bullshit "crowdsourced from Reddit" lie and smear. Deceptive Sarah knows that if you read the comments like I'm telling to do here that you'll clearly see that I had completed 90% of the letter by my first "Feedback, please" March 26th Reddit post and that her claim that it was crowdsourced on Reddit is clearly false and debunked.

Moving next to the next "Feedback, please" Reddit Post I made on April 11, 2013 - just 1-2 days before attaching the PDF and sending it to the Director.

Reddit Feedback Post #2 - April 11, 2013:

Link: Follow-up from TBM Grandpa's CES Director friend asking me to share concerns. Final draft of letter is done! Let me know what you guys think before I send.

Now, go to the above link and read each and every comment. Notice that there's nothing on there of substance that I could've used to write the letter. There's no "crowdsourcing" going on here.

It's obvious by this date that the letter was 100% completed and that I didn't get any crowdsourcing help in writing the letter between March 22, 2013 to April 13, 2013.

Deceptive Sarah has read these comments and knows that she's lying about the crowdsourcing. She has even taken one of the comments from the Reddit posts to twist and distort it by lying that I'm telling people to "share it with as many people as possible" when I wrote nothing of the kind.

As you can clearly see with the evidence, screenshots and direct links that I provide, Sarah Allen is lying to everyone about me. Her entire series smear campaign is filled with distortions and falsehoods just like this one.

I'm just so over Deceptive Sarah Allen and her incessant lies. Shame on you, Sarah.

Sarah's virtue signalling and holy water attempt

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

When I prayed about how best to start this series, I felt strongly that it should start by highlighting the manipulation techniques and dishonesty of the Letter itself and of the Letter’s author, Jeremy Runnells. I’ll dive into the content of the Letter next week, but this week, I wanted to lay some groundwork.

Jeremy's Response

Would you look at Sarah's virtue signalling here? She prayed about it, guys. What did Sarah Allen's brain and nervous system, disguised as the Mormon god, tell her? She "felt strongly" (extra bonus points for adding "strongly"!) that she should lie about and smear Jeremy Runnells.

Well, game over, guys. Time to pack up and go home. Sarah Allen just got the warm fuzzies and the stamp of approval from the Mormon god that her work is true. I can't compete with that. Stan's not answering my calls.

Let's fly 30,000 ft. up in the air. Look at all the suffering in the world right now. What's going on in Kabul. The little children getting murdered and bombed in Afghanistan. Their gut-wrenching and heartbreaking sheer terror and pure desperation in trying to escape the Taliban. The billions of prayers of mothers begging for god's help and intervention in saving their starving and tortured children here and around the world.

God is not intervening or helping them. God is MIA just like he was during the Holocaust. But lucky for Sarah Allen in Provo, Utah, she received a direct intervention and FastPass answer from the Mormon god on what to do about that minivan-carpooling-labradoodles-snuggling-deaf-dad who wrote a PDF.

Sam Harris wrote it best:

"Everyone can see that there is no evidence for a God who answers prayers and that any God who would grant prayers for football championships, while doling out cancer and car accidents to little boys and girls, is unworthy of our devotion. Everyone who has eyes to see can see that if the God of Abraham exists, He is an utter psychopath—and the God of Nature is too. If you can’t see these things just by looking, you have simply closed your eyes to the realities of our world."

The god that Sarah thinks answers her prayers is a god who tells her to continue defaming a critic of her religion and who helps her find her lost car keys in her apartment. The depth of narcissism and lack of self-awareness on display here is just astounding.

Reza Aslan said it best when he says that when people describe God to you, they are really describing themselves. The "answer" and "greenlight" that Sarah "got" from her "god" to denigrate, lie about, defame and smear me while deceiving her readers really tells you a lot about Sarah Allen.

Nice try though, Sarah, bringing god into this with your utterly embarrassing attempt at virtue signalling. Nice try attempting to throw holy water on your series smear campaign by claiming that you "felt" god tell you that your disgusting immorality is okay, your rancid garbage is okay and your dishonest smear hit pieces have his holy stamp of approval.

Deceptive Sarah's misleading mischaracterization

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Jeremy's Response

Let's break down Deceptive Sarah's above deceptive paragraph below:

Opening paragraphs of CES Letter

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

In the opening paragraphs of the Letter, Jeremy Runnells claims that he’s searching for answers to his questions and is hoping a CES director can help save him from his doubts and restore his testimony. That is misleading.

Jeremy's Response

Deceptive Sarah finally talks about the "opening paragraphs of the Letter" (passing glance) but only does so after I had blasted her, in my Part 1 Debunking, for hiding the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter from her echo chamber readers.

Notice that Deceptive Sarah doesn't give us any links or quotes or screenshots. She just gives us her unsupported lies and mischaracterizations instead. Lucky for you, here's the direct link to the Introduction page of the CES Letter and here's a screenshot of the PDF page:

See what Deceptive Sarah did there? There's nothing in there about the CES Director "saving me from my doubts and restoring my testimony".

What's misleading here is Deceptive Sarah and her deceptive mischaracterizations.

As you can see in the above screenshot, I was 100% transparent and honest from Day 1 with the CES Director and with the world. It's all right there:

"I'm a disaffected member who lost his testimony so it's no secret which side I'm on at the moment...it doesn't make sense for me to just lay down 5 concerns while also having 20 other concerns that legitimately challenge the truth claims of the LDS Church...I was a very active and fully believing member my entire life up until around the summer of 2012."

This is why Deceptive Sarah doesn't give her readers the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter that I sent to the Director on April 13, 2013 (Jim Bennett can confirm this).

Deceptive Sarah is projecting onto me her own ignorance and gross misunderstanding of reality. In Sarah's simple black-and-white Mormon brain, when someone is in a faith crisis and disaffected from the Church, they are 100% out and their minds are 100% closed. They're now evil and anything they do is motivated by evil and mustache-twirling. There is no gray area. There is no grace or compassion on the part of Sarah Allen.

The context that Sarah isn't giving her readers here is that I had spent the entire year of 2012 in a faith crisis and all the emotions that come with it. What Sarah isn't sharing here is that I spent this entire year studying unofficial apologetics by people like Sarah and FAIR and others. It was a hair-pulling year of frustration in dealing with contradictory and bizarre homemade versions of Mormonism that did not align with the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I wasn't asking the Director to "save me" or "restore my testimony" like Sarah is misleading her readers here in what I'm saying in the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter. As I wrote:

[Name of CES Director Removed],

Thank you for responding to my grandfather's request to answer my concerns and questions and for offering your time with me. I appreciate it.

I'm interested in your thoughts and answers as I have been unable to find official answers from the Church for most of these issues. It is my hope that you're going to have better answers than many of those given by unofficial apologists such as FairMormon and the Neal A. Maxwell Institute (formerly FARMS).

I'm just going to be straightforward in sharing my concerns. Obviously, I'm a disaffected member who lost his testimony so it's no secret which side I'm on at the moment. All this information is a result of over a year of intense research and an absolute rabid obsession with Joseph Smith and Church history. With this said, I'd be pretty arrogant and ignorant to say that I have all the information and that you don't have answers. Like you, I put my pants on one leg at a time and I see through a glass darkly. You may have new information and/or a new perspective that I may not have heard or considered before. This is why I'm genuinely interested in what your answers and thoughts are to these issues.

I've decided to put down in writing just about all the major concerns that I have. I went through my notes from my past year of research and compiled them together. It doesn't make sense for me to just lay down 5 concerns while also having 20 other concerns that legitimately challenge the truth claims of the LDS Church.

A quick description of my background might help you understand where I'm coming from. I was a very active and fully believing member my entire life up until around the summer of 2012. My grandpa already outlined my life events to you in his email so I think you get the idea that I accepted and embraced Mormonism.

Amazing, huh? Amazing how obvious Deceptive Sarah is mischaracterizing when you actually read the actual opening paragraphs of the CES Letter for yourself, huh?

Now you know who's doing the actual misleading here.

"I believe Jeremy gave letter to Director"

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

I’m not saying that he didn’t deliver a copy of his letter to a CES director. I believe that he did.

Jeremy's Response

Fantastic, Sarah. Now, tell everyone why you believe that I delivered a copy of the letter to a CES Director. Go on. Tell them.

Sarah: "...because Jeremy showed all the evidence to my fellow Mormon apologist comrade Jim Bennett and Jim Bennett publicly came out to defend Jeremy by stating that he's satisfied that Jeremy is telling the truth about the CES Director and the CES Letter's origins."

Jim confirms Jeremy's telling the truth

If I hadn't sat down with Jim Bennett and showed him everything, Sarah would be singing a completely different tune here. She'd be singing the same tune her FAIR TITS Gang buddies did in 2020 by confidently and loudly proclaiming that the CES Director is fake and that I lied and made it all up and that I never sent a real letter to a real Director.

The reason why you believe, Sarah, is because I destroyed your old false belief and false assumptions by doing something that you consistently will not do in your entire series con job: provide evidence, screenshots and direct links.

"Jeremy was PIMO"

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Jeremy's Response

You're acting like you've discovered a dirty secret that I hid my disbelief and disaffection. You didn't because I didn't. You're just lying to your readers about what I wrote and conceded in the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter, which the Director himself saw in April 2013 (that Jim Bennett confirms).

It's all right here. Go do your homework, Sarah, and stop misrepresenting me and lying about me.

Sarah continues to showcase her complete cluelessness and ignorance here by mislabeling me as having been "PIMO" at the time. Uh...I was further than that, Sarah. I was "POMO" - Physically Out, Mentally Out.

It's all right there in the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter that you continue to hide, obfuscate, mislead, mischaracterize and obstruct from your readers, Sarah:

"I'm a disaffected member who lost his testimony so it's no secret which side I'm on at the moment...it doesn't make sense for me to just lay down 5 concerns while also having 20 other concerns that legitimately challenge the truth claims of the LDS Church...I was a very active and fully believing member my entire life up until around the summer of 2012."

There's no scandal here, Sarah. I know you desperately want there to be one but there just isn't one. There 👏 just 👏 isn't 👏 one 👏. It's all right there in the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter. Always has been since Day 1 and always will be. I was honest and transparent on where I was every step of the way since the very beginning.

I know this is hard for you to get into your deeply indoctrinated Mormon brain, Deceptive Sarah, but that lying evil version of Jeremy you have in your head? He isn't real. The actual Jeremy Runnells is an honest man whose #1 value is integrity. This is why your series smear campaign disturbs and disgusts me...you can call me different names and make fun of me...but to baselessly call me a fawking liar? That I cannot and will not abide by.

Sarah again deceives her readers by misleading them with her cluelessness and ignorance. Just go to the Opening paragraphs of the CES Letter section.

I didn't work to lead others out with me. This is from Sarah's gross deception and mischaracterization of my Reddit comments and concerns about my very young children being indoctrinated. You can get the info and context here in the Destroy Testimonies section of my Part 1 debunking of Sarah's deceptive bullshit.

And finally, Sarah just interjects her own clueless opinion based on false and incomplete information that I "was not hoping this CES Director could answer unanswerable questions". Again, go to the Opening paragraphs of the CES Letter section and see what I actually wrote to the Director. I was interested in the Director's official answers after an exasperating year of dealing with Sarah's handler's unofficial pet theories. Also, Sarah? You might want to work on your simple black-and-white lens of the world...people can still have open minds - even those disaffected Mormons in faith crisis that you can't hide or contain your absolute disdain for.

Cook Letter

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

He was lashing out, the same way he did several months earlier with his angry Letter to Elder Quentin L. Cook, posted to the Exmormon subreddit on October 9, 2012.

Jeremy's Response

lol..."lashing out".

Jim Bennett said the same thing in his Reply. This is just amateur greenie apologist Sarah plagiarizing and copying from Jim and his work (which leads to my announcement that you can read here.)

Sarah...2013 called and told me to tell you that you're 8 years late to the party.

I wrote about my Quentin Cook Reddit post and addressed it all the way back in 2013 when I wrote Debunking FairMormon. You can see the page I address this here. This is how unoriginal Sarah is...she's plagiarizing FAIR's 8-year-old attacks made against me that I addressed and debunked all the way back in 2013.

Oh look, Sarah...look at these cute graphics I made for the same above-linked 2013 page debunking the same Reddit attacks you've been making in both Part 1 and Part 2 with your FAIR plagiarism:

As you can see, Sarah is just an amateur middleman copying and plagiarizing other people's work. Why not just skip Sarah's distortions and go straight to the sources and my rebuttals to those sources that she plagiarizes from? See Announcement.

I also talked about it in my April 2014 Mormon Stories interview with John Dehlin.

What's the scandal that you're trying to cook here, Sarah?

That I left the Church before the CES Director approached me in March 2013? Well, duh. It's in the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter that I keep having to repeat myself here about and which you keep misleading and lying to your readers about.

A common theme in Deceptive Sarah's series con job is this scandal that she keeps trying to cook up that I "hid" from the Director and the world that I left the Church before the Director showed up. And a common theme that I keep repeating and pointing to is, "I revealed my disaffection and leaving the Church in the summer 2012 in the freaking opening paragraphs of the CES Letter itself, which concession Sarah keep hiding from her readers because it ruins her bullshit narrative and lies she uses to smear me with in her series con job."

Grow a conscience, Sarah, and stop lying about me. It's all there here and here.

Deceptive Sarah sets her fake stage

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

If you understand that he misrepresented his story and told one thing to the public while saying something completely different to his friends on the Exmormon subreddit, and that he specifically organized the Letter to be as manipulative and overwhelming as possible, it helps you put the Letter’s questions and accusations in the proper context. This first post is not meant to be an attack on Jeremy’s character. It’s merely meant to show that he’s not “just asking questions,” the way he’s claimed. It’s to show that the entire premise the letter, a public cry for help from a floundering member who desperately wanted to save his testimony, was false. In fact, Runnells was already mentally out of the Church, trying to devise the best way to lead away the rest of his family, and actively helping others push their own family and friends out of the Church as well. That information is important because it sets the stage for what follows and helps you gauge the truthfulness of the document itself.

Jeremy's Response

Sigh...let's break down the above paragraph below:

Public Jeremy vs. Reddit Jeremy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

"If you understand that he misrepresented his story and told one thing to the public while saying something completely different to his friends on the Exmormon subreddit"

Jeremy's Response

The only misrepresentation going on here about my story is Sarah Allen's misrepresentation and lies about my story.

I've conclusively and thoroughly debunked Sarah's misrepresentations in my Part 1 debunking as well as here in Part 2. I have been honest from Day 1 with the Director and the world that I was a disaffected member who had left the Church in the summer of 2012. It's right there in the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter, which Sarah deceptively hid from her readers in her original Part 1 FAIR blog post and which she is still deceptively hiding from her readers in the rest of her series smear campaign:

"as manipulative and overwhelming as possible"

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

"he specifically organized the Letter to be as manipulative and overwhelming as possible"

Jeremy's Response

No, Sarah. I've debunked your "manipulation tactics" and "Gish Gallop" bullshit in Part 1 and here in Part 2.

It was just a letter to a CES Director, Sarah. Nothing more. Nothing less. This is just you creating strawmen and lies to try to get your echo chamber readers to avoid reading the CES Letter or to actually research the LDS Church's truth crisis.

Stop blaming your religion's overwhelming truth crisis on me or the CES Letter. If it's overwhelming, it's because of the LDS Church's overwhelming truth crisis - not because of the CES Letter. There would be no CES Letter if this was really God's one true church and if the church did not have an overwhelming number of serious problems and challenges to its foundational truth claims.

"proper context"

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

"it helps you put the Letter’s questions and accusations in the proper context"

Jeremy's Response

"Proper context" and Deceptive Sarah Allen is the funniest oxymoron of the year. Sarah has never given her readers the "proper context". I prove this in Part 1 and here in Part 2.

Sarah just shares propaganda and lies. I share evidence, screenshots and direct links for my readers to verify for themselves that I'm telling the truth while giving the proper context.

Anyone can clearly see that Deceptive Sarah refuses to give proper context when she hides the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter from her readers where I explicitly state that I'm a disaffected member who left the Church in the summer of 2012.

Anyone can clearly see that Deceptive Sarah isn't giving the proper context when you actually read the direct Reddit posts that only I - not Sarah - provide direct links and screenshots to in debunking Deceptive Sarah's lies that I "crowdsourced" the letter on Reddit.

"not meant to be attack on Jeremy"

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

"This first post is not meant to be an attack on Jeremy’s character."

Jeremy's Response

lol...Deceptive Sarah is so full of shit. This is from her rebranded and rewritten "first post" where she omits the fake quotes and debunked stuff from her original first post a week earlier. Sarah is trying to throw her original disastrous real first post down the memory hole here by creating a brand new fake "first post" while having the audacity to lie that this is "not meant to be an attack on Jeremy's character".

What universe is Sarah Allen in? Of course it's meant to be an attack on Jeremy's character. Everyone can clearly see that my integrity and character are the sole focus of her machine gunfire in her deceptive smear campaign. I defended myself by debunking all of her original Part 1 direct assaults on my integrity and character and what does Deceptive Sarah Allen do? She tries to do a do-over by creating a brand new "Part 1" while claiming the original Part 1 smear hit piece that I debunked was hilariously "loaded inadvertently".

I'm just so over Deceptive Sarah Allen. She lies and lies and lies while not playing honest or FAIR.

Sarah lies about premise of letter

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

"It’s merely meant to show that he’s not “just asking questions,” the way he’s claimed. It’s to show that the entire premise the letter, a public cry for help from a floundering member who desperately wanted to save his testimony, was false."

Jeremy's Response

This is why Deceptive Sarah doesn't give her readers the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter that I sent to the Director in April 13, 2013 (Jim Bennett can confirm this):

It's all right there:

"I'm a disaffected member who lost his testimony so it's no secret which side I'm on at the moment...it doesn't make sense for me to just lay down 5 concerns while also having 20 other concerns that legitimately challenge the truth claims of the LDS Church...I was a very active and fully believing member my entire life up until around the summer of 2012."

All of this is a nothingburger filled with Sarah's lies and strawmen while completely ignoring facts and context.

CES Director: "Give me a list of your issues and concerns about the Church."

Jeremy: "Thanks. I'm disaffected from the Church and I left in the summer of 2012. I'd love to see the Church's official responses to these issues. Here's my list."

Mormon apologists / Sarah Allen: "Public cry for help from a floundering member who desperately wanted to save his testimony...all lies!"

Jeremy: ...

Runnells was already mentally out of Church

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

"In fact, Runnells was already mentally out of the Church, trying to devise the best way to lead away the rest of his family, and actively helping others push their own family and friends out of the Church as well. That information is important because it sets the stage for what follows and helps you gauge the truthfulness of the document itself."

Jeremy's Response

Of course I was mentally out of the Church! It's right there in the fawking opening paragraphs of the CES Letter itself. lol...Jesus.

It was the entire point of the CES Director approaching me and asking me to share my concerns and questions in the first place.

Sarah...see all of my above answers and stop lying. Start telling the truth to your readers. The best place to start is by sharing my actual opening paragraphs of the CES Letter that I sent to the Director from Day 1.

Sarah's other lies and deceptions about my "actively helping others to push their own family and friends out of the Church as well" are lies that I debunked in Part 1 here.

And no, Sarah...it doesn't set the stage for truth. It sets the stage for your carefully crafted and fake Mormon propaganda that you've designed and engineered for the sole purpose of smearing and destroying my name, integrity and character.

There's no truth, honesty, context, facts or fairness here in Deceptive Sarah Allen's series con job.

If Sarah Allen's Bishop is reading this...sir, you might want to consider taking Sarah's Temple recommend away. She's not honest in her dealings with her fellowmen.

Misapplying "Dokumentenschock"

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

It’s specifically designed to produce an emotional reaction and make the person being inundated by information panic. In German, this is called dokumentenschock, or “document shock.” It’s when you get so overloaded by information that your brain simply shuts down and stops processing, because you’re so overwhelmed you can’t concentrate and you just don’t know how to proceed. Your mind blanks because it doesn’t know what else to do.

Jeremy's Response

Wait...are you describing the CES Letter or FAIR's website?

Know what's hilarious? We can take Sarah's above paragraph exactly as-is and it perfectly describes fairlatterdaysaints.org.

I can't even begin to tell you how many people have told me over the years about how a simple Google search for a Gospel lesson question landed them on FAIR's website and they were so "inundated by disturbing information" and "document shock" that they were "overloaded by information" that they had never heard before that absolutely floored them.

Sarah's dokumentenschock attack is just stupid. It's stupid because she's misapplying the blame.

It's not the fault of the CES Letter if it's "overwhelming" to the reader. It's the fault of the LDS Church's truth crisis. It's the Church's truth crisis that is overwhelming.

The CES Letter would not have the number of concerns and questions in it if the LDS Church's truth crisis wasn't so staggeringly massive.

Indeed, there would not be enough ink to fill the pages of the CES Letter if the LDS Church was really God's one true Church and its "prophets, seers and revelators" were actually prophets, seers and revelators who really had and have a bat phone line with God.

Sarah's LDS Subreddit Intro

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

This is from Sarah's LDS subreddit Part 2 introduction found here:

Intro: In response to some comments from earlier installments, I wanted to get a few things out of the way up front. Yes, I will be addressing the content/questions of the letter in future installments. Be patient. No, I am not personally attacking Jeremy Runnells and no, reading his back-and-forth with the CES director in question would not change my opinion, because I never claimed that he didn't contact the CES director. My claim was that his public façade was belied by his private comments.

In Part 1, I used his own words and timelines to show that he was telling one story to the general public while telling quite a different story to his friends on the exmormon subreddit. I did that in order to show that the entire premise the letter, a public cry for help from a floundering member who desperately wanted to save his testimony, was false. In fact, Runnells was already mentally out of the Church, trying to devise the best way to lead away the rest of his family, and actively helping others push their own family and friends out of the Church, as well. That information is important because it sets the stage for what follows. When you know that the entire thing is based on a lie, and that it was specifically engineered to be as manipulative as possible, that helps you gauge the truthfulness of the document itself. I made no accusations or judgments on the man, only his contradictory words.

Let's unpack and debunk the above nonsense individually below:

Sarah lies about ad hominem and personal attacks

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

No, I am not personally attacking Jeremy Runnells and no, reading his back-and-forth with the CES director in question would not change my opinion, because I never claimed that he didn't contact the CES director. My claim was that his public façade was belied by his private comments.

Jeremy's Response

Bullshit. You do attack me personally, Sarah. You're lying and defaming me with fake quotes, gross mischaracterizations, deceptions, incomplete information, omissions and zero context for your readers. Your sole purpose in doing all of this is to try to destroy my name, integrity and character.

Instead of focusing on the arguments and issues in the CES Letter, you take ad hominem to the next level here by not just attacking my name, character and integrity but you do so with absolute falsehoods, fake quotes, deceptions and incomplete information.

I didn't contact the CES Director, Sarah. The CES Director contacted me. You can't even get the most basic foundational fact of the CES Letter's origins correct. But I'm sure you're going to educate us all, Deceptive Sarah, about how the CES Letter "really came to be".

"My claim was that his public façade was belied by his private comments."

"Private comments"? All of the quotes you use to attack me are from public Reddit posts/comments you grabbed from my own public Reddit profile as well as on public pages on cesletter.org! All public domain and transparent. What are you talking about, Deceptive Sarah? You can't even be honest that the comments you're twisting, faking and distorting here in your agenda to defame me and my integrity are all public - not "private".

The only "belied" going on here is Deceptive Sarah's deceptive series smear campaign that is disguised as a "rebuttal" and that Deceptive Sarah is this "honest" apologist out to save the world from Jeremy Runnells and the CES Letter.

I demonstrate conclusively in my line-by-line debunkings that Deceptive Sarah is a liar who is not interested in truth or honesty.

Oh god...that debunked and misapplied Gish Gallop again

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Previously, I explained what a "gish gallop" was and how the letter is a textbook example of that technique. This kicked off multiple threads in the exmormon sub about how it wasn't, which I admit amused me. (I'm occasionally petty; I'm working on it!) The fact is, when you look at the definition of the term, it matches the CES letter exactly.

To restate for anyone who missed last week's installment of this series, a gish gallop is a debate/manipulation technique in which one person overwhelms another with "a rapid series of specious arguments, half-truths, and misrepresentations in a short space of time, which makes it impossible for the opponent to refute them all… In practice, each point raised by the 'Gish galloper' takes considerably more time to refute or fact-check than it did to state in the first place."

RationalWiki elaborates on this technique: "Although it takes a trivial amount of effort on the Galloper's part to make each individual point before skipping on to the next (especially if they cite from a pre-concocted list of Gallop arguments), a refutation of the same Gallop may likely take much longer and require significantly more effort (per the basic principle that it's always easier to make a mess than to clean it back up again)."

It's specifically designed to produce an emotional reaction and make the person being inundated by information panic. In German, this is called dokumentenschock, or "document shock." It's when you get so overloaded by information that your brain simply shuts down and stops processing, because you're so overwhelmed you can't concentrate and you just don't know how to proceed. Your mind blanks because it doesn't know what else to do.

Later in the article, RationalWiki also explains, "The strength of the Gish Gallop is in its ability to create the appearance of authority and control. The Galloper frames the debate and forces opponents to respond on their terms. The Galloper wins by making the point that their opponents have failed to disprove their arguments sufficiently or completely enough for their satisfaction. Their goal is not to win on the facts, but to minimize the time and effort they need to expend to achieve maximum apparent credibility, while ensuring that opponents expend maximum time and effort in rebuttal for inconsequential gains. They want to drop a bomb into your lap and run away, telling you it can only be disarmed when they say it is, and that it isn't their job to tell you when it's disarmed."

In a fantastic presentation given in 2019, René Krywult quoted an ex-LDS anthropologist named Manuel W. Padro, who explained, "This tactic of intentionally luring Latter-day Saints into a situation where they are bombarded with questions they don't know how to answer is a documented tactic used by these groups … and even before it was documented, it was clearly going on. … When I was a kid, the Lighthouse Ministry and CARM (the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry) were the two big groups using this strategy. Now Mormon Stories, the Life After Ministry, Mormonthink and a number of other groups are all relying on the same abusive tactic. They are trying to coerce you into a situation where they can bombard you with so many doubt-provoking questions that they can cause your resolve to collapse and your identity to fall apart. Inside of that vacuum, created by an act of psychological rape, they hope to impregnate you with their own belief system. … If that sounds abusive, it's because that's what it is. It's an extension of the cultural legacy of the Inquisition. They can't torture you, but they can humiliate you and pressure you with questions you don't have an answer to yet. They try to hit you up with too many of these questions to answer, because if they don't, it wouldn't work. That's how the CES letter works. It's garbage, but it's a common strategy in the anti-Mormon ministry.”

Krywult goes on to explain, "If you want to overwhelm someone with mass, each argument per se is irrelevant. As long as you have the word count and enough question marks, you will reach your goal. But if the reader really takes apart one argument after the other, nothing remains."

Jeremy's Response

Oh god, there's the completely misused and misapplied "Gish Gallop" again.

Sarah...your religion's truth crisis is overwhelming. It's not a "Gish Gallop" problem. It's an LDS truth crisis problem.

"anti-Mormon ministry"? lol...you know I'm agnostic atheist, right? I have no better Jesus to sell you here. I have no cult or essential oils to recruit you in. I don't think you're in a satanic cult as I don't believe in boogeyman Stan. Your LDS Church status has zero effect on me and my life. I really do not care if you stay in or out of the Church. I really don't.

But back to Gish Gallop. Sarah, you are misusing this fallacy. It doesn't apply here. The letter was written to a CES Director in 2013 when he approached me asking me to share all my concerns and questions. There was no debate. There still is no formal debate.

There's no timer. Mormon apologists have had close to a decade to respond to the CES Letter and they have. And I have debunked them and am still debunking them.

Just stop misusing Gish Gallop. It doesn't work with the CES Letter as you're just misusing and misapplying it.

Again, the reason why it's all overwhelming is because the LDS Church's truth crisis is vast and overwhelming. The reason why it's overwhelming to members and apologists is because it makes them look at the entire forest instead of hiding in the forest distracting themselves with nonsense trees.

Anyway, here's more on Gish Gallop:

Only in a Mormon apologist's mind is the following formula "Gish Gallop":

CES Director in 2013: "Hi Jeremy, your grandpa asked me to help address your questions and concerns. Can you share them with me?"

Jeremy in 2013: "Thanks for your offer to help. I'm really looking forward to your answers as they will be as close to official answers I've seen after dealing with these unofficial apologists and their unofficial pet theories for a year. Here you go...(attaches PDF letter with questions and concerns)"

Present Day Jeremy:

In my CES Letter Introduction page, which Sarah unfortunately ignores and does not share with her readers, I state:

It's all right there. Exactly what I sent to the CES Director on April 13, 2013. Jim Bennett can confirm this. I shared about my disaffection, when my faith crisis started, I stopped belief and activity in the summer of 2012, where I was at then and why I was listing all of these issues and problems to the CES Director.

So...why didn't Sarah Allen and FAIR share the above very pertinent information with their readers?

There was no evil-mustache-twirling. No advanced "manipulative" strategy planning (WTF?). No attempt to overwhelm (if it's overwhelming, it's the fault of the LDS Church's truth crisis - not mine).

But yeah...funny how things change when you get the full context and backstory, huh? When you actually read what I wrote in the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter, huh? I wonder how many of Sarah's readers walked away with a grossly misinformed understanding of what happened and what my motives were because Sarah forgot to share this critically important information and context?

Moving on to the ridiculous Gish Gallop attack:

Sarah Allen is pointing to an attack that was made over 7 years ago in the summer of 2014 by Daniel C. Peterson. It's an asinine and misused attack against me and the CES Letter that demonstrates a severe ignorance of the CES Letter along with a fundamental misunderstanding of what Gish Gallop is. It just doesn't work or apply in the case of the CES Letter, as I demonstrate below.

Here's my debunking of Daniel C. Peterson's talk.

The basic attack and premise is that the CES Letter is just a "Big List" designed and engineered for the purpose of overwhelming the reader and destroying his or her Mormon testimony.

This "big list" attack is also referred to as "Gish Gallop", which is defined as:

John Dehlin in his interview with Jim Bennett shares his view of apologists using this disingenuous attack against the CES Letter:

The apologetic Gish Gallop attack against the CES Letter is ridiculous. The CES Letter has been online since April 2013. There is no such thing as Gish Gallop online.

There is no timer. The internet is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

FairMormon Mormon Daniel C. Peterson <em>CES Letter</em>

One of the most well-worn apologetic cards is that of misapplying logical fallacies. The "big list" or "Gish Gallop" that apologists refer to is a tactic used in debates to drown out reasoned responses because there's a time limit. The shotgun approach is effective at giving an opponent too much to address in their allotted time, and it gives the impression that the attacker has "won" because the response is lacking.

Apologists are incorrect that the CES Letter takes any such approach. The internet is not a formal debate club and Mormon apologists do not have a time limit.

The CES Letter is not a Gish Gallop as it's a list in written form of grievances, questions and concerns to a CES Director who, by the way, requested them. The CES Letter is not a Gish Gallop as there is no time limit to respond to it. Indeed, Mormon apologists have had the time to respond to it over the years and I lovingly reciprocated in return.

The CES Director requested my list of doubts and concerns. I was not trying to win a debate nor did I think I was in a debate with the CES Director when I wrote the letter. It was not written to overwhelm anyone or to destroy anyone's testimony. I was seeking official answers from the Church to these problems.

The CES Director asked me to lay down my concerns on the table so I did exactly just that. I wanted his official answers. For Mormon apologists to claim that the letter is a "big list" is more of a testament of their fundamental misunderstanding of the CES Letter's background story and purpose than it is that the CES Letter is a "big list." It's a testament of their ignorance on what the Gish Gallop is.

CES Director: "Give me a list of your issues and concerns about the Church."

Jeremy: "Sure, here's my list."

Mormon apologists: "Big List! Gish Gallop! Sheer volume of complaints designed to bring someone's 'shelf' crashing down."

Jeremy: ...

The apologists and the CES Director are not being drowned out and have had plenty of time to respond to each issue. In fact, apologists have and I have responded to them. You can see a list of my debunkings here.

What's ironic is accusing the CES Letter of Gish Gallop and "Big List" attack when FairMormon and apologetic sources could be accused of the exact same thing.

"ad hominum circumstantial"

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Another technique used in the CES letter is the fallacy of ad hominum circumstantial. It says that "unofficial apologists" and others responding to the CES letter from a faithful source can't be trusted because they believe in the Church's truth claims. Therefore, the only people equipped to properly respond to the CES letter are former members or those who have never joined the Church. No one who is a faithful member is unbiased enough to respond.

Obviously, this is a ridiculous premise. Who else can better understand our history and beliefs? We all hate it when someone tells us what we're meant to believe. You wouldn't go to a gardener to ask what an astronomer studies, so why would you go to someone who was never a member of the Church to explain what Latter-day Saints actually believe?

Jeremy's Response

It's spelled "ad hominem circumstantial". But tell us more, Sarah, about ad "hominum" circumstantial. I'm not familiar with the "hominum" version.

Psst...wanna see something cool? Okay, let's go to FAIR's homepage. You there? Awesome. Now scroll as fast as you can until you bump into the very bottom. You're there? Great! Tell me what it says...

"Any opinions expressed, implied, or included in or with the goods and services offered by FAIR are solely those of FAIR and not those of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

Sarah doesn't get the problem because she's part of the problem as a newly disposable apologist for FAIR. The ones who get the problem are the ones who have gone through the FAIR / apologetic wringer during their own faith crisis.

FAIR (FairMormon) has its own version of Mormonism that conflicts with and contradicts the official teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As shown above with FAIR's own disclaimer that their opinions are not those of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, FAIR preaches its own philosophies and pet theories of FAIR mingled with scripture. FAIR's gospel is a gospel of contradictions and eye-raising theories that would shock the average Chapel Orthodox Mormon.

Sarah keeps misusing and misapplying Gish Gallop on the CES Letter. Notice that she doesn't attack FAIR with Gish Gallop. FAIR is the king of Sarah's homemade definition and version of Gish Gallop. I cannot even begin to tell you how many people I've talked to over the years who single-handedly point to FAIR as the instigator and catalyst of their faith crises. I hear stories all the time about Sunday School teachers or Priesthood / Relief Society teachers Googling a question, landing on FAIR's website and just drowning in a sea of overwhelm due to finding out questions that they didn't even know they had. Then more questions. Then more crazy philosophies of FAIR mingled with scripture. And down the rabbit hole they go.

Finally, Deceptive Sarah's above red box comment is one big strawman. She's misrepresenting what I've written and what my position is. I'm not saying that you shouldn't listen to or consider what unofficial apologists and members of the Church say and claim about the LDS Church's truth crisis. I'm not saying that you should only listen to non-members or former members. This is just Deceptive Sarah's bullshit strawman.

I'm simply pointing out the exact same thing as FAIR's disclaimer on the bottom of their homepage: they and their ilk do not speak for the LDS Church. As they rightly point out, it's their "opinions" that are not of those of the LDS Church. In other words? It's exactly as I've written all over the place: FAIR's pet theories and philosophies of FAIR mingled with scripture are just unofficial opinions. They are unofficial opinions and "faithful answers" that often contradict and conflict with the official teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

It matters where the answers are coming from. It matters what the Church says. This is why the LDS Church's Gospel Topics essays are so critically important and supersede FAIR. This is why FAIR apologist Sarah Allen hilariously omits and hides direct mentions of specific Gospel Topics essays from her readers. This is why I point people to the LDS Church's Gospel Topics essays more than I point people to FAIR. The Gospel Topics essays are official answers while FAIR's is not.

Anyone who doesn't get this (apparently Sarah is in this camp) has not experienced Kirton McConkie or President Newsroom (LDS Church's PR Department).

Bullshit "Other fallacies" list

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document are the appeal to authority (defaulting to what scholars say, rather than addressing the actual evidence presented); appeal to the majority (also called the Bandwagon fallacy — "Most of the world doesn't believe this, so why should we?"); appeal to emotion (manipulating someone's emotions to win an argument); appeal to flattery ("Only the intelligent people will accept what we're saying," i.e., "If you'd only study the Church's history, you'd disbelieve it, too!"); appeal to ridicule (distorting someone's beliefs to make them seem more absurd, a favorite tactic of anti-Mormons everywhere — "Latter-day Saints think they'll get their own planet someday," "They believe that Jesus and Satan were brothers," etc.); accusations of contradiction (i.e., "Yesterday's doctrine is today's false doctrine. Yesterday's prophets are today's heretics"); wishful thinking (asserting that what the author hopes is true is actually true, i.e., "There's no evidence in favor of the Book of Mormon"); appeal to novelty (as if the CES letter was the first of its kind or unique from any other anti-Mormon tract of years past); argument from fallacy ("The CES director couldn't answer my questions, so therefore, the questions don't have answers and the Church is not true!"); argumentum ad nauseam (repeating the same things over and over again, as if that would make them true); false dilemma ("If you can't thoroughly explain every single thing we say, the Church can't be true"); double standard ("The Book of Mormon can't be the word of God because there were clarifications and corrections made in later editions!" despite the fact that the CES letter itself has been published in multiple versions with numerous corrections, additions, omissions, and clarifications); false premise ("The Book of Mormon introduction used to say that the Lamanites were the ancestors of all Native Americans, but DNA says they weren't, so the Book of Mormon can't be true!"); and allegations of cognitive dissonance (i.e., "There are intelligent people who believe in the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, but only idiots would believe that, so their testimonies must be the result of cognitive dissonance!").

Jeremy's Response

Deceptive Sarah completely misunderstands, misapplies and misuses the Gish Gallop fallacy and the ad hominem circumstantial (which she can't even spell right) fallacy with the CES Letter so let's see what other fake logical "fallacies" Sarah also does not understand and also misuses and misapplies in trying to discredit the CES Letter.

I'll just list and debunk each one of the above misused and misapplied fallacies that Deceptive Sarah uses:

Misused "appeal to authority" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"appeal to authority (defaulting to what scholars say, rather than addressing the actual evidence presented)"

Jeremy's Response

Scholars like Dr. Robert Ritner and Dr. Michael Coe are experts in their respective fields (Egyptology and Anthropology / Archaeology, respectively). Why the hell would I not point to them and what they're saying about the Book of Abraham and the Book of Mormon?

I point to both the scholars and the actual evidence. What Deceptive Sarah doesn't tell her readers is that the CES Letter is not the end of my writings and that I have over 2,000+ pages worth of apologetic responses and debunkings that dive deeper into the issues and evidences that the CES Letter was not written for or designed for.

It's not an appeal to authority fallacy, Sarah, to point to actual respected scholars and what they've concluded about the truth claims of the Book of Abraham and the Book of Mormon.

This is just stupid. This is a misused and misapplied fallacy attack on the CES Letter by Deceptive Sarah.

Misused "appeal to the majority" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"appeal to the majority (also called the Bandwagon fallacy — "Most of the world doesn't believe this, so why should we?")"

Jeremy's Response

Pointing out that institutional racism and institutional polygamy is morally wrong and that the majority of the world is morally superior to the Lord's one true church and its so-called "prophets, seers and revelators" is not an appeal to the majority fallacy, Sarah. It's an appeal to decency and conscience by pointing out that when the so-called "evil and wicked world" is vastly morally superior than your morally bankrupt religion and its morally bankrupt prophets in 1889 and 1977, you might want to rethink a few things about the truthfulness and moral compass of your religion and the moral code of its leaders.

This is just stupid. This is a misused and misapplied fallacy attack on the CES Letter by Deceptive Sarah.

Misused "appeal to emotion" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"appeal to emotion (manipulating someone's emotions to win an argument)"

Jeremy's Response

?

How am I "manipulating someone's emotions" here to "win an argument", Sarah? It was a private letter to a CES Director who asked me to share my story, my questions and my concerns. This was an emotional letter from me to him in hopes he would give me the official answers from the Church that I was looking for after an exasperating year of dealing with hair-pulling unofficial pet theories from the likes of FAIR.

It wasn't an argument. It wasn't a debate. I wasn't trying to manipulate anyone. It was just a letter to a CES Director sharing my frustrations, pain, struggles, questions and concerns.

This is just stupid. This is a misused and misapplied fallacy attack on the CES Letter by Deceptive Sarah.

Misused "appeal to flattery" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"appeal to flattery ("Only the intelligent people will accept what we're saying," i.e., "If you'd only study the Church's history, you'd disbelieve it, too!")"

Jeremy's Response

What does this have to do with the CES Letter, Sarah? I write nothing of the kind in the letter. Why are you misrepresenting the CES Letter with misleading claims and attacks and misapplied fallacies that are not true?

This is just stupid. This is a misused and misapplied fallacy attack on the CES Letter by Deceptive Sarah.

Misused "appeal to ridicule" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"appeal to ridicule (distorting someone's beliefs to make them seem more absurd, a favorite tactic of anti-Mormons everywhere — "Latter-day Saints think they'll get their own planet someday," "They believe that Jesus and Satan were brothers," etc.)"

Jeremy's Response

Notice that Deceptive Sarah doesn't give us specific CES Letter examples from the letter to support her specific fallacy attacks. She goes broad and vague with bullshit strawmen that have nothing to do with the CES Letter.

There is no "appeal to ridicule" in the CES Letter, Sarah. You would have listed those specific examples if there were but you haven't because you can't. So, you instead create strawmen and misrepresentations instead.

I don't write about "getting your own planets" or "Jesus and Satan are brothers" in the letter. The fact that you use these attacks against the letter shows that you don't know what you're talking about, that you haven't even read the letter and that you're over there stuck in a Mormons vs. evangelicals war (since these are predominantly evangelical concerns and attacks) that I'm not even a part of. We're actually on the same team there, Sarah, as I resent most anti-Mormon evangelicals and have a long history with them. In fact, if we were ever together at an event where the evangelicals were waving garments and "protesting"? I'd be right by your side telling them to fawk off and to leave the Latter-day Saints alone.

This is just stupid. This is a misused and misapplied fallacy attack on the CES Letter by Deceptive Sarah.

Misused "accusations of contradiction" fake fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"accusations of contradiction (i.e., "Yesterday's doctrine is today's false doctrine. Yesterday's prophets are today's heretics")"

Jeremy's Response

Finally an actual example from the CES Letter. This is more evidence of my prior point in that all of the above fallacies have nothing from the CES Letter in Sarah's examples because Deceptive Sarah can't find specific examples from the letter to support her bullshit fallacy attacks. If there were actual examples from the letter, Deceptive Sarah would have used them as examples like she is doing here with an actual quote from the letter.

Now we're in Deception Land. "Accusations of contradiction" isn't even a logical fallacy. It's completely made up. Go Google it. It's nowhere to be found. Try finding it on this Master List of Logical Fallacies. It's nowhere to be found.

Why are we entertaining what Deceptive Sarah has to say? Why do we give a shit what Deceptive Sarah thinks when she can't even spell a logical fallacy and she's now doling out completely made up and fake logical fallacies? When she is completely misusing and misapplying logical fallacies left and right with fake quotes that have nothing to do with the CES Letter? I'm done with Deceptive Sarah after this Part 2 debunking. Just done.

Your fallacy here is made up, Sarah. Therefore, your point is moot. Further, my CES Letter statement stands as it's showing the blatant and clear contradictions between so-called "prophets, seers and revelators" over time (racism, polygamy, Adam-God, Temple changes, etc.).

This is just false, fake and stupid. This is a fake fallacy attack on the CES Letter by Deceptive Sarah Allen.

Misused "wishful thinking" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"wishful thinking (asserting that what the author hopes is true is actually true, i.e., "There's no evidence in favor of the Book of Mormon")"

Jeremy's Response

?

I never write "There's no evidence in favor of the Book of Mormon" in the CES Letter. This is Deceptive Sarah lying about me and the CES Letter. I do write specific statements like the following: "There is absolutely no archaeological evidence to directly support the Book of Mormon or the Nephites and Lamanites, who were supposed to have numbered in the millions" and I go on to support this claim. This statement is a true and factual statement.

Deceptive Sarah is back dishing out fake quotes falsely attributed to me and the CES Letter by lying about what I actually wrote.

This is Deceptive Sarah trying to create a logical fallacy that doesn't exist while blatantly misrepresenting me and the letter.

What's wishful thinking here is Sarah and her apologist buddies trying to claim there is credible evidence for the historicity of the Book of Mormon.

Misused "appeal to novelty" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"appeal to novelty (as if the CES letter was the first of its kind or unique from any other anti-Mormon tract of years past)"

Jeremy's Response

What the hell is this?

I have no idea what Deceptive Sarah is saying here. I don't understand what her point here is? I never claimed any of the above. I never said or wrote "the CES Letter was the first of its kind or unique from any other anti-Mormon tract of years past". This is not in the CES Letter as Deceptive Sarah is lying and claiming.

It was just a letter to a CES Director, Deceptive Sarah. Nothing more. Nothing less. The Director approached me asking for me to share my concerns and questions; not the other way around.

The fact that you use words like "anti-Mormon ministry" and "anti-Mormon tract" shows how clueless you are and how you're stuck in the Mormons vs. evangelicals paradigm. I'm agnostic atheist, sweetheart. There's no "ministry" as I have no better Jesus, silly Bronze Age books or shiny new cults to sell anyone. I don't care if people stay or leave the LDS Church as it has zero effect on my life.

Sarah, the fact that you mislabel the CES Letter as a "tract" shows that your understanding of the meaning of the word "tract" and your understanding of the CES Letter is about as good as your "hominum" misspelling of "hominem".

Sarah doesn't know what she's talking about and is continuing to misuse and misapply logical fallacies to the CES Letter with her ignorance, fake quotes and incorrect assumptions.

Misused "argument from fallacy" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"argument from fallacy ("The CES director couldn't answer my questions, so therefore, the questions don't have answers and the Church is not true!")"

Jeremy's Response

Fawk...what is it with you and your incessant fake quotes, Sarah? You're such a liar.

I never wrote or said "The CES director couldn't answer my questions, so therefore, the questions don't have answers and the Church is not true!". This is your fake quote - not mine.

I never claimed that the CES Director couldn't answer my questions. All of this is your fake quote attempt to denigrate and smear me.

The CES Director not getting back to me just means that the CES Director didn't get back to me. Unlike you, Deceptive Sarah, I don't project onto others or make up shit about them or push down my own assumptions down their throats while claiming my assumptions are their positions and beliefs.

There is no argument from fallacy here. There's just fake quotes and lying from Deceptive Sarah Allen.

Misused "argumentum ad nauseam" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"argumentum ad nauseam (repeating the same things over and over again, as if that would make them true)"

Jeremy's Response

This is deceptive and false. When I repeat something in the CES Letter, the purpose is to connect the existing topic with another related topic to show the high level view or "forest" of a disturbing pattern of Joseph Smith and his character and integrity. It is not done for "ad nauseam" purposes but to reinforce a larger point and argument about Joseph Smith's pattern of behavior and deception over time.

For example, it matters repeating the rock-in-the-hat fraudulent trick that Joseph used to deceive his customers when talking about Joseph and the Book of Abraham. Or the Kinderhook Plates. It matters showing that Joseph lied to his wife Emma and the world about secret polygamy / polyandry and taking this snapshot of his immorality and applying it to Joseph's conduct with backdating revelations, Priesthood restoration claims, the multiple first vision accounts, Book of Mormon, Book of Abraham and so on and on.

Mormon apologists love to separate and isolate issues and problems. They want to hide in the trees instead of allowing their readers to see the entire forest. In order to see the entire forest and how everything is connected in this pattern is to sometimes repeat things.

I'm not repeating things "to make them true". I'm repeating things to connect the dots of various related issues in conveying higher level points.

This is just desperate apologists like Sarah trying to throw another fake, misused and misapplied fallacy to the letter to create a big impressive list of fake fallacies for their echo chamber readers.

Misused "false dilemma" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"false dilemma ("If you can't thoroughly explain every single thing we say, the Church can't be true")"

Jeremy's Response

This is a fake quote and bullshit strawman from Deceptive Sarah. I never said or wrote this quote Sarah is quoting me on and it's certainly not in the CES Letter. I never make this claim and I don't know any other Post Mormon who does either.

This also demonstrates that Clueless Sarah doesn't understand the burden of proof and how the burden of proof works. The Church is making a bunch of claims in its truth claims. The onus is on the Church and its defenders to back up their claims and assertions...not the other way around with critics pointing out the inconsistencies and problems of the Church's truth claims and assertions.

This is a stupid, fake, misused and misapplied fallacy and example given us by Deceptive Sarah.

Misused "double standard" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"double standard ("The Book of Mormon can't be the word of God because there were clarifications and corrections made in later editions!" despite the fact that the CES letter itself has been published in multiple versions with numerous corrections, additions, omissions, and clarifications)"

Jeremy's Response

LOL...Deceptive Sarah claims a logical fallacy by giving us a logical fallacy of her own with her stupid example and dig.

Here's what Joseph Smith wrote and said about the Book of Mormon:

“I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.” (History of the Church, 4:461.)

Here's what's claimed about the book's origins:

It was translated by "the gift and power of God" - D&C 135:3

The Book of Mormon we have today was translated with a rock-in-a-hat. It was a tight translation. Accounts of this tight translation clearly show that there was no room for errors or mistakes. Certainly not the 100,000+ errors and mistakes that the Book of Mormon had to get tuned up and repaired for.

I'm not a prophet. I'm not a cult leader. I didn't write scripture nor am I claiming to have written scripture or anything special or supernatural like Joseph Smith did with the Book of Mormon.

You're not hearing "the most correct book on earth" and "translated by the gift and power of FSM" from me.

It was a simple letter to a CES Director - who asked for it. It was written by a regular man seeking official answers from the Church on these problems and concerns.

Apples and oranges, Deceptive Sarah. Guess what logical fallacy you just made, Deceptive Sarah? False equivalence.

In my 2014 Mormon Stories, I called the letter a "living document". What I meant was that I was and am committed to keeping the document as accurate and complete as possible. And I have (as evident by my updated versions over the years) and I will continue to keep this commitment because integrity is my most cherished value.

The double standard fallacy that Deceptive Sarah is claiming here is misused and misapplied because Deceptive Sarah is creating a false strawman and false equivalence in her example trying to support her double standard fallacy claim. Critics are not saying that the Book of Mormon can't be the word of God because of corrections made. Critics are saying that the Book of Mormon can't be the word of God because it has racism in it. It has anachronisms in it. It has the Tower of Babel in it. It is debunked by science and DNA. It has modern KJV errors and italics present in the book. It has 19th-century Protestant themes, phraseology and ideas in the supposed "ancient" book. It has a lot of problems that your stupid little strawman misrepresents and doesn't reflect of.

Misused "false premise" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"false premise ("The Book of Mormon introduction used to say that the Lamanites were the ancestors of all Native Americans, but DNA says they weren't, so the Book of Mormon can't be true!")"

Jeremy's Response

No, Deceptive Sarah. The false premise here is the false premise that you're presenting to us with your bullshit example and fake quote.

Here's what it actually says in the CES Letter on this issue:

DNA analysis has concluded that Native American Indians do not originate from the Middle East or from Israelites but rather from Asia. Why did the Church change the following section of the introduction page in the 2006 edition Book of Mormon, shortly after the DNA results were released?

“...the Lamanites, and they are the principal ancestors of the American Indians”
to
“...the Lamanites, and they are among the ancestors of the American Indians”

UPDATE: The Church conceded in its January 2014 Book of Mormon and DNA Studies essay that the majority of Native Americans carry largely Asian DNA. The Church, through this essay, makes a major shift in narrative from its past dominant narrative and claims of the origins of the Native American Indians.

Funny how different that looks from Deceptive Sarah's fake quote and example, huh? I wrote nothing about this meaning "tHe bOoK oF mOrMon iNtrOdUcTiOn sAys tHis sO tHe BoOk oF mOrMoN cAn'T Be tRuE!" as Deceptive Sarah is misleading her readers to mean I'm saying.

This is a stupid, fake, misused and misapplied fallacy and example given to us by Deceptive Sarah Allen.

Misused "allegations of cognitive dissonance" fallacy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Other fallacies present in the document...

"allegations of cognitive dissonance (i.e., "There are intelligent people who believe in the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon, but only idiots would believe that, so their testimonies must be the result of cognitive dissonance!")"

Jeremy's Response

Oh, look...another fake quote, strawman and fake example from Deceptive Sarah.

I never wrote or said such a thing. Certainly not in the CES Letter as Deceptive Sarah is lying about here. Why is Deceptive Sarah using this against me or the CES Letter when it has nothing to do with me or the CES Letter?

This is a stupid, fake, misused and misapplied fallacy and example given us by Deceptive Sarah Allen.

Charts & Tables Mischaracterization

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

In addition to all of these, the letter also employs a lot of charts and tables, because people tend to look at the entire list of entries on the chart, rather than the actual content and arguments being shown, and they think there must be some legitimate arguments if that list is so long.

However, that isn't true, as I'll outline in later segments. A prime example is the list of city and town names Joseph supposedly stole for the Book of Mormon from nearby cities and towns in his vicinity. This list has been debunked many, many times, and will be a pretty fun section when we get to it. In fact, Jeremy Runnells knows it's ridiculous, and asked the exmormon subreddit whether he should take it out, alter it with a disclaimer admitting that it's weak, or leave it as is. There is a screenshot of that here. He ended up leaving it basically as is, with a few of the most egregiously bad arguments removed, because other members of that sub liked it.

Jeremy's Response

Another bullshit strawman of Deceptive Sarah's. I can't win with her. If I didn't include charts and tables, she would be telling us how shoddy and "unscholarly" the CES Letter is. I put in charts and tables and she's presenting her strawman that it's a "manipulative technique" diabolically and methodically designed to brainwash and "manipulate" readers.

I talk about the Maps in my line-by-line Jim Bennett debunking in the Book of Mormon section. I agree with the apologists that it's the weakest part of the CES Letter. I've publicly acknowledged this. Again, I go over all the details on this in the above link. I want you to notice here how Sarah is calling this low hanging fruit that I've already conceded as "weak"...as "pretty fun". Notice that Sarah doesn't have the same zest and enthusiasm for the Book of Abraham or Polygamy | Polyandry or the Book of Mormon problems or epistemology or the Kinderhook Plates or multiple first vision accounts as she does something that I've already conceded as "weak". How come you're not hearing from Sarah about how "pretty fun" those subjects are?

Sarah ends by grossly misrepresenting and mischaracterizing what really happened. I debunk Sarah's (and other's) misrepresentations and mischaracterizations in the above-mentioned Jim Bennett debunking link.

"Overstating credentials" & Sarah Gaslighting

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Another thing you often see in things like this is the overstating of credentials. We're all used to that. People show up on these subs and say things like, "I was born in the Church and served a mission and held these callings and married in the temple, and…" Runnells does that in his letter several times. How could he, someone who did all of those things, be blindsided by the information in the letter?

Well, that's simple. Everyone has different experiences and everyone studies different things and has different teachers. Some people were taught all of these things while growing up, and others weren't. I was taught in Primary that Brigham Young and Joseph Smith both had multiple wives. Others weren't. That doesn't mean the Church was hiding it, it just means their Primary teacher either didn't know about it or didn't think to teach them that the way mine did. Some people love reading history and theology, and others think that's boring. Someone who studies Church history for fun is going to find out a lot more of these answers than someone who only thinks about the Church's history while he's actually in Church meetings.

Jeremy's Response

"Overstating of credentials"? lol...WTF?

Only in Deceptive Sarah's universe is the following "overstating of credentials":

And in Introduction page of CES Letter:

By the way, notice that Sarah talks about my talking about my "credentials" in the CES Letter. Most of where I talk about my "credentials" is in the Introduction page. You know...the same page with the opening paragraphs that annihilate Deceptive Sarah's entire evil-mustache-twirling version of Jeremy narrative? This demonstrates that Deceptive Sarah wasn't mistaken here in her entire scandal cooking deception campaign against me. It demonstrates that Sarah is deliberately dishonest and deliberately deceptive with her readers as she knows that I wrote in the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter to the Director (and to the world) that I left the Church and I left in the summer of 2012.

Anyway, here's Sarah's next paragraph and claim where she gaslights us all and gives us her own Sarah Allen Mormonism® bullshit mental gymnastic excuses to try to justify her religion and prophets lying to and hiding from the members for decades and generations:

"Well, that's simple. Someone who studies Church history for fun is going to find out a lot more of these answers than someone who only thinks about the Church's history while he's actually in Church meetings."

So simple, right? Blame it on the members. It's your Primary teacher's fault. There's your Primary teacher dead under the bus as Sarah threw her there to shield her immoral "prophets, seers and revelators" from fraud.

Hey, Deceptive Sarah....meet Jim Bennett. He's also an apologist. Guess what? Jim has something that you don't have: integrity. Here's Jim Bennett acknowledging that the Church has not been transparent to its members:

"I felt like a chump"

Oh look, Sarah...LDS scholars and historians who know more than you. Let's see what they have to say about the LDS Church's truth crisis and about the Church hiding stuff from members in the past:

The Changing LDS Narrative

Sarah...there's a cool word that you should look up and learn about sometime: Correlation. There's a reason why Primary Teacher Sally didn't talk about Joseph's polygamy or the rock-in-the hat...it wasn't in the manuals that she was relying upon to teach her students. And thanks to the Church's Correlation and deception, Primary Sally didn't know about these issues herself and likely wouldn't know about these issues until much later in the Google and Gospel Topics essays Age when she was in her late 50s. But hey, it's Primary Sally's fault and not LDS, Inc.'s fault. In Deceptive Sarah's universe, LDS, Inc. is blameless.

The only people who are eating up Deceptive Sarah's bullshit gaslighting and revision of history here are the desperate faithful who also locked themselves in the LDS subreddit echo chamber with Sarah Allen.

Blatant Sarah hypocrisy

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

In his presentation, Krywult gave some tips for navigating this misinformation and manipulation:

  • Calm Down
  • Check What You Can Check
  • One Point at a Time
  • Don’t Become Consumed

When you're studying and you come across information you didn't know before, stay calm. If you're feeling overwhelmed and in shock, take a break. Find something that helps you restore peace, whether that's praying, reading your scriptures, or vegging out over Netflix or a video game, it doesn't matter. Just take a break until you can calm down and look at things rationally, rather than at the height of emotion. Krywult recommends not reading things like the CES letter when you’re tired, hungry, ill, or angry, because it'll just exacerbate your feelings of shock. Wait until you're in a good headspace to address the issues.

There's so much going on in the letter, and so many questions bombarding you, that the best thing to do is to approach it logically. Check the things you can easily check. While the letter has a lot of things in it that many members haven't heard before, some of it is familiar. Some if it is about things you already know. If you already know about something, you can go over that topic more easily and less emotionally than you would something else. That gives you a good foundation for proceeding with the rest of it.

Check the sources you've been provided. Are they valid? Are they all biased in the same direction? How does the letter address the sources? Are they quoted accurately, or does the author take some liberties? If so, how do those liberties alter the source material's take on the issue?

When you're overloaded with information, the best thing to do is to take it all one point at a time. List them out and rank them according to priority, and deal with the most pressing ones first.

Evaluate it — what about the claim is true or not true? What does it mean if it's entirely true? How does it affect my testimony if it is? This is exactly what I did when I was a kid and I first learned about Joseph putting his seer stone into a hat during the translation process. I realized it didn't matter in the slightest, because it doesn't change anything for me. I still believe the Book of Mormon was translated by the power and gift of God. I still believe that it's an ancient record of people who really lived. I still believe it's another testament of Jesus Christ. I still believe that the doctrine contained inside is true. Does the translation method really matter to me? Nope, it sure doesn't. If anything, it makes it even more impressive to me, for reasons I'll go into more when dealing with that section of the letter.

Jeremy's Response

Look at all this stuff about checking sources and asking if the sources are valid. I spit out my coffee on my keyboard when I saw Deceptive Sarah ask above about if "they quoted accurately, or does the author take some liberties?" Sarah is the last person on the planet to be giving advice about accurate quotes. Sarah is where quotes go to get bastardized and die. Exhibit A: Part 1.

But yeah...this is all hilarious coming from "stay out of our r/lds echo chamber or we'll delete and ban your ass" amateur Mormon apologist and moderator Sarah Allen.

Sarah talks about when she was a kid learning about the rock-in-the-hat and then proceeds to try to minimize this as a nothingburger that "didn't matter in the slightest, because it doesn't change anything for me." Well, if that's the case, Sarah, you don't understand the core problem of the rock-in-the-hat problem. I talk about these core problems of the rock-in-the-hat problems here in my Jim Bennett Mormonism® Manifesto debunking.

While Sarah claims to not care about the rock-in-the-hat and is pretending to wave it off as a "nothingburger", the reality is that the rock-in-the-hat problem disturbs many, many people. It's not just about lack of transparency from LDS, Inc. on the rock-in-the-hat translation. It's about the folk magic Pandora's Box that this unleashes and how it annihilates the LDS Church's well crafted founding narrative and Book of Mormon narrative.

Sarah claims that she has "impressive" stuff to show us later. I looked ahead on Reddit and saw Sarah's "impressive" stuff. Spoiler alert: It's just unimpressive debunked apologetic nonsense that no one other than delusional apologists and the desperate faithful take seriously. I talk about the same "impressive" stuff in my Jim Bennett debunking - in the Book of Mormon and Book of Mormon Translation sections.

Echo chamber bravado & deceptive Satan strawman

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Analyze those claims — what is Runnells claiming? What are the known facts? What can you find about it? Hunt down everything you can find about that particular topic, and read about it from a variety of sources and slants. Then, pray and figure out what you believe about it. Don't listen to his opinion, or mine, or anyone else's. Listen to the Spirit. Don't move on to the next issue until the first is resolved in your mind. Krywult once had an issue that took him three years to resolve. I had one that took me six months, but in the end, I walked away with a stronger testimony, and so did he.

And don't allow yourself to be overwhelmed by this search. Make time for other things and prioritize your health and your family time. You have time. You don't need to find answers immediately. You don't have to make a decision right away. That's one of the manipulations of the letter, and of the Adversary: they make you feel like you have to make an immediate decision. That is not true. You can take the next 20 years to decide if you want. That pressure is imaginary. You can ignore it. You can bat it aside and buckle down and do your studying at your own pace. You can take your time and do it thoroughly.

Jeremy's Response

Compare Echo Chamber moderator Sarah's above comment to her previous comments that I'm copying and pasting here:

"And lastly, I will not link to the letter itself, Jeremy's website, or the exmormon subreddit, and ask that others do not do so in the comments. Thank you."

A lot of people have complained that they were deleted and banned off of LDS subreddit for pointing out Sarah's inaccurate claims and inconsistencies. Well, duh. Sarah is the moderator lol. She's created her series smear campaign in the same subreddit echo chamber that she controls! She literally has the power to delete and ban people who dare say anything in her bullshit "series" posts that undermine her or her unsustainable propaganda.

Apparently, my definition of investigation is different from Sarah's. I believe in showing both sides of the argument. I don't believe in locking myself and others in an echo chamber. I don't believe in hiding stuff.

Sarah's answer to the LDS Church's truth crisis is to "pray about it and listen to the Spirit". Sarah doesn't get that this recipe doesn't work as this is flawed epistemology that people of other faiths also use to arrive at completely different conclusions about their own faith tradition truth claims. I debunk this epistemology in the Testimony & Spiritual Witness section of the CES Letter as well as in my debunking of Jim Bennett's Reply to the CES Letter.

"I walked away with a stronger testimony, and so did he."

I was waiting for this bravado.

Mormon apologist Jim Bennett did the same stunt by trying to claim that he came out of all of this with his testimony intact and that his testimony was "strengthened" as a result. The truth and reality is much different as Jim has since gone on his own "faith journey" where he's had to adjust his testimony in different ways based on what he's learned. I talk about this here.

This is a common manipulation tactic that Mormon apologists use. They try to portray to their readers that All is Well in Zion and that they've not only escaped the issues but they've escaped with their testimonies intact. It's an appeal to authority fallacy.

What you don't know, dear reader, is that these apologists end up creating different testimonies and their own private homemade versions of Mormonism as a direct result of confronting the LDS Church's truth crisis. They don't have the same kind of "testimonies" that you'd expect an Orthodox Correlated Chapel Mormon to have. Indeed, if a Chapel Mormon were to really talk to these apologists and find out how they really view Mormonism, it would absolutely shock them to their core.

"That's one of the manipulations of the letter, and of the Adversary: they make you feel like you have to make an immediate decision."

What is this ridiculous lie and fake strawman, Sarah? Where do I make the claim or assertion that the reader has to make an "immediate decision"? I never made or make such a claim. I don't even tell the reader to do anything let alone "make an immediate decision". This bullshit lie and misrepresentation is just as asinine and ridiculous as Sarah's boogeyman Stan ("adversary") scare tactic.

You see what Deceptive Sarah just did here? While lying about me and the CES Letter claiming that I tell people to make "an immediate decision", Sarah deceptively associates the letter with her "adversary" boogeyman Stan.

Flawed epistemology and Occam's razor blindness

CES Letter Rebuttal says...

Sarah Allen / FAIR says...

Michael Ash gives some more things to remember:

It's easier to make an accusation than it is to refute an accusation

Smart people don't always agree with one another

The strength of evidence is often a matter of interpretation

It's okay to disagree about whether or not something is convincing. Different people have difference experiences, as I said. What's convincing to me won't always be convincing to you, and vice versa. That's okay. It's all part of the journey we're each on, to discover our testimonies for ourselves.

Consider the narrative: who's speaking, and what's their motivation? Are they trying to build up your faith, or tear it down? What does the speaker get out of it? What end result are they trying to help you achieve?

Remember the parable of the Sower. A sower tosses out his seeds without care, and some fall on the wayside with no soil. Some fall on rocky ground, some on thorny ground, and some on good soil. In three of the four cases, the seeds fail to grow because they weren't planted in the right soil. That's true of our testimonies. Make sure your testimony is planted in good soil. Make sure you have that firm foundation, and if you don't, search out the answers to the questions that are making that foundation wobbly. Search out that good soil, and plant yourselves there.

Develop your own emotional, intellectual, and spiritual maturity. Don't rely on what information someone else is feeding you. Search it out for yourself, and rely on your Father in Heaven and His Holy Spirit. Consider each question prayerfully, and search your scriptures. Lean on Him to help you through those mists of darkness, because that's what He’s there for. Learn to understand that things aren't always black and white, and history is messy and full of gaps in our knowledge. Ask God for understanding and clarification, and ask Him to point you toward the resources you need to find. I promise you that He will lead you to the answers. It might not happen immediately, but it will happen. He did it for me, and He'll do it for you. Just slow down, take your time, and work through it methodically and patiently. The answers will come.

Jeremy's Response

This is why Deceptive Sarah has spent ridiculous amounts of ink in creating a fake bullshit narrative of an "evil" and "diabolically brilliant and manipulative" Jeremy Runnells who lies 6 ways to Sunday. She's trying to poison the well here about me with her readers so that she can point to me and say, "look at who's speaking here and what his motivation is!"

Deceptive Sarah: "Jeremy wants to destroy your Mormon testimony"

Rational person: "Why are you saying that Jeremy wants to destroy Mormon testimonies?"

Deceptive Sarah: "Jeremy has ulterior motives that he has lied about and kept hidden from the world. Look at his public Reddit comments. He hid that he left the Church before the Director."

Rational person: "...uh, Jeremy has always clearly stated that he was a disaffected member who left the Church and he left in the summer in 2012. He wrote this from Day 1 and it's right there in the opening paragraphs of the CES Letter which is exactly the same as what the CES Director saw in April 2013."

Deceptive Sarah: "Jeremy is running an anti-Mormon ministry"

Rational person: "Jeremy is agnostic atheist. Do you even know what a 'ministry' is, Sarah? He has no better Jesus to sell you. No new shiny cult to recruit you in. He has consistently stated that he doesn't care what your LDS Church status is. He has even told some people to stay in the Church. Again...why are you claiming that Jeremy just wants to destroy Mormon testimonies?"

Deceptive Sarah: "Jeremy is a liar"

Rational person: "Jeremy annihilated your claims in Part 1, which is your foundation for claiming this unfounded lie. You're full of shit, Sarah."

Michael Ash's above recipe for truth is full of problems.

The main problem is the epistemology that apologist Ash is advocating and pointing to as the solution here. This flawed epistemology of praying and relying on the Holy Spirit is not a reliable pathway to objective truth and reality. I've demonstrated this in my Testimony & Spiritual Witness section of the CES Letter as well as in my line-by-line debunking of Jim Bennett's Testimony & Spiritual Witness section. There are countless people of other faiths who use this same epistemology to arrive at completely different and mutually exclusive claims about their own gods and their own faiths.

The answer is there when you apply Occam's razor. The answer is there when you stop assuming that you have the truth. The answer is there when you put aside your confirmation bias and objectively look at the data as if you were a non-Mormon investigator. Everything fits and aligns perfectly when you go up onto the cliff and see the entire Mormon forest and see all of the combined problems collectively while reason stares intensely back at you.

No god or warm fuzzy feelings needed to discover this reality and truth.

Announcement

Done with Deceptive Sarah

I'm done with amateur greenie apologist Sarah Allen. I'm just done.

Deceptive Sarah has demonstrated that she is not willing to be fair, honest and transparent. I can't take her seriously because she clearly does not understand what she's criticizing or defending nor is she willing to treat this as a real debate. She just wants to hide in her LDS subreddit and FAIR echo chambers and ignore anything that contradicts her deceptive claims. All she does is plagiarize other apologists' work while twisting, distorting, omitting and obfuscating shit in unreal deceptive ways. Incessant ad hominems (or "hominum" if you're going to misspell it like our expert amateur apologist Sarah does). She does this constantly. I clearly and unequivocally demonstrate all of this in Part 1 and Part 2 of the The CES Letter Rebuttal / Sarah Allen / FAIR debunkings.

Sarah Allen has demonstrated that truth, fairness, honesty and transparency are not values that she holds nor are they foundational values for her series smear campaign. Sarah Allen has lost her way and has forfeited her integrity, honor and decency in trying to defend the indefensible.

After looking over the rest of Sarah's series smear campaign on Reddit that she is using for her weekly FAIR blog posts, it is obvious to me that Sarah just plagiarizes other apologetic attacks. In fact, she lists Jim Bennett as the first name as a source that she refers people to in her /lds Reddit echo chamber as a resource. It's also obvious that she blatantly copies from Jim Bennett and his work for her entire series smear campaign.

Jeremy's line-by-line debunking of rest of issues:

So, let's skip Deceptive Sarah's lies, distortions and Jim Bennett plagiarism by going directly to Jim Bennett's work and my line-by-line debunking of his work instead:

I'm sorry but I just can't stand seeing Deceptive Sarah's face, ad hominems, lies and smears anymore. I'm so repulsed by her. She has demonstrated that she is not a person of integrity, empathy, fairness or kindness. In Sarah's universe, the end justifies the means. Deceptive Sarah doesn't play fair. She lies so much that to engage with her series smear campaign is to be distracted from the LDS Church's truth crisis. This is done by design.

I care about effectiveness. I want my readers to focus on the LDS Church's truth crisis. This is what they care about. Who cares about Jeremy Runnells? Sarah is making this about me instead of focusing solely on the LDS Church's truth crisis and the actual issues, questions and arguments presented in the CES Letter.

You're wasting so much time and effort sorting through and detangling Deceptive Sarah's lies that there's no room left to actually research the LDS Church's truth crisis. After reviewing the rest of Sarah's series smear campaign on Reddit, it's clear to me that I would be doing my readers a disservice from their research in the LDS Church's truth crisis by taking them away from the direct sources amateur greenie apologist Sarah plagiarizes from and piggybacks on in her attempts to make a name for herself in Mormon apologetics.

I've defended my good name, integrity and character here while demonstrating conclusively that Deceptive Sarah does not play fair, honestly or credibly. Sarah Allen is not worth another millisecond of our precious time and energy and so I'm out.

See you all over in the Jim Bennett and FAIR line-by-line responses and debunkings.
